A Seed, Is Not Just Seed...

The grass seed is the building block for your entire landscape, why start with an inferior product that is disease prone, lacks fall color (cool season grasses), and is not certified, yes certified by your state agricultural collage or the agricultural extension agency in you region. In North Carolina it’s NC State and for South Carolina it’s Clemson University. I just cannot stress enough how important the selection of grass seed is to the overall success of an over seeding or restoration project. Grass seed bought in your local big box stores may not provide the ultimate results.

Grass seed… the most important aspect of over seeding and lawn restoration. Using only a high quality, premium quality seed is of the utmost importance.

It’s a Crop…

Grass is a crop, much like wheat and has an optimum planting time. For cool season grasses it’s normally September and for warm season grasses it’s usually May. It all depends mostly with the soil temperature.

Cool Season Grasses

90F

Shoot growth ceases.

77F

Root growth ceases.

70F

Maximum temperature for root growth of any consequence.

70F

Time to plant grasses in late summer.

60-75F

Optimum temperature for shoot growth.

50-65F

Optimum temperature for root growth.

40F

Shoot growth ceases.

33F

Root growth ceases.

20F

Low temperature kill possible if temperature subsequently drops rapidly below 20F

Warm Season Grasses

120F

Shoot growth ceases.

110F

Root growth ceases.

80-90F

Optimum shoot growth.

75-85F

Optimum root growth.

74F

Optimum time to over seed Bermuda grass with ryegrass in the fall. Time to plant grasses in the spring.

64F

Expected spring root decline is triggered and roots turn brown and die within 1 or 2 days.

50F

Root growth begins to slow below this temperature.

50F

Chilling injury resulting in discoloration is possible.

50F

Initiation of dormancy occurs resulting in discoloration.

25F

Low temperature kill possible.

 Spring vs. Fall seeding...

Spring is not the best time to over seed cool season grasses in the Carolina’s. Even though the soil temperature may be optimum, the seedlings generally do not have time enough to mature before the summer heat arrives, these are cool season grasses.

We would highly recommend that unless your lawn is totally divested as a result of our lack of rain fall, wait until fall to over seed. Spring is the time for pre-emergent’s to fight summer weeds. Our pre-emergent program is a split application that will help fight weeds well into the summer.

Our Program…

For those with divested lawns, lots of bear spots or otherwise poorly established lawns, seeding in the spring is your only option to try and establish a lawn. Please understand that by seeding in the spring, you are forgoing pre-emergent weed control, as a pre-emergent will act upon newly seeded grasses just as it would weeds. Timing is critical for success.

Organic Lawns’ has developed a special program for spring seeding. Our program will help your lawn get a jump start on Mother Nature and provide reasonable success with limited weed protection, but you must get started while there is still ample time for the seed to establish itself. Note we said reasonable success, no matter how hard we fight the battle, Mother Nature seldom looses the fight. Our program is designed to give your lawn the best chance possible.

There is a lot more to growing grass than just spreading seed. Our seeding application, both spring and fall is a multi-step program. We don’t just sow, we encourage it to grow.

To properly over seed or renovate a lawn is a time consuming and labor intensive process, its an investment on your part and we want you to receive the best possible results. Many lawn service companies do not take the time or put in the effort that it takes to provide optimal seeding success. In reality their job is mowing, and making your lawn look as nice a possible. Over seeding or fertilization is a service they provide, not their specialty. We don’t mow, we make it grow. It’s our specialty!
